Campion School is an 11-18 mixed academy converter school located in Leamington Spa Warwickshire which requires expansion to cater for 210 additional places per year to increase the overall capacity of the school to 1,400.
The expansion is proposed to be completed in 3 phases with this first phase aimed to provide a standalone 17 classroom Science and Maths Block, expansion to the existing Kitchen and Canteen facilities along with an external works package to provide additional hard play areas and onsite parking.
The new building location on site was chosen to minimise any reduction to existing playing field areas resulting in a challenging task to tie in with existing levels on this sloping site and programme the works whilst in a live environment.
The Perfect circle were appointed to provide project management, quantity surveying and health and safety and Design Services from Stage 0-7, currently the project is at Stage 4 benefitting from early collaboration with framework contractors and the supply chain which will result in time and cost savings during the later stages.
The main key challenge will be to programme the Kitchen refurbishment works and car park works to suit the school’s timetable. This phase of the work will have to be completed within tight time frames in a live environment taking advantage of the school half term and summer break where possible. Safe vehicular and pedestrian access will need to be maintained at all times to ensure adequate onsite parking is provided and the school can operate with minimal disruption.
We have carried out a transport assessment which has highlighted mitigation works are required to the adjacent round about due to increased car journeys to the site as a result of the schools expansion. The on-going challenge is to agree suitable time scales for this work to be complete without impacting the current budget.
There are plans afoot to construct a new access road through the site to serve a future residential development. The development forms part of the government local plan for housing so we have had to review the impact of this on the school and agree a solution to minimise disruption.
We inherited this project from WCC after initial feasibility study by another architect company has been completed. We interrogated the original design to find that proposal did not react to the existing site conditions. We re-designed the orientation and access to the building taking into consideration the existing levels resulting in a successful solution.
The design team have substantial experience with school expansion projects from Primary to Further Education.
Early collaboration with framework contractors and the supply chain which will result in time and cost savings during the later stages.
The expansion of Campion School is necessary to provide additional school places following the construction of new residential developments in the area in order to achieve the Local Authorities housing targets.
The project will benefit from PV panels on the roof to give a 10% return in renewable energy. New habitat areas will be created from the large amount of spoil that will be moved as part of this project saving logistical costs transporting this to landfill.
