Waterside Bridge takes shape to connect Nottingham communities

Significant progress has been made on the construction of the multi-million-pound pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the River Trent in Nottingham.
Once complete, the 85m-long Waterside Bridge will offer a vital new link across the river, encouraging active travel and improving connectivity between neighbourhoods on either side of the Trent.
Pick Everard is providing project management, cost management and health and safety services for the scheme, through Perfect Circle via the SCAPE Consultancy framework.
The bridge is currently taking shape in Hucknall, where large steel sections are being fabricated by Briton Fabricators. Once fully assembled, the steel superstructure will be dismantled into six parts and transported to a specialist painting facility later this summer.

The bridge will then be assembled on-site on the banks of the River Trent, thoroughly safety tested, and lifted into place in November using one of the largest cranes in the world.
Balfour Beatty is leading the project as the main project partner.

The new bridge is funded by the Transforming Cities Fund, provided by Central Government. It will be the flagship and final project from the City Council’s Transforming Cities Fund programme. The programme began in 2020 following a successful joint bid between Nottingham and Derby for over £160m of central Government funding for projects which encourage inter-city connectivity and lower carbon journeys.
"It was great to come together with the wider project team and Nottingham City Council to see the impressive progress being made on the Waterside Bridge. Reaching this milestone, with the main arch and bridge deck now fabricated along with its supporting temporary works, is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. The next step will see the structure move on for painting, bringing us even closer to the bridge’s completion.”

Once complete, the Waterside Bridge will form a key part of Nottingham’s active travel network and boost inner city connectivity.
