The London Borough of Brent has appointed Perfect Circle to design a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Grand Union Canal Paddington Arm at Alperton.

Partner AECOM has progressed concept design of a half-through bridge deck, following a feasibility study. The project presents a range of engineering and environmental challenges, including proximity to heritage and existing infrastructure, invasive species on site and construction within a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).

When open, the bridge will improve active travel connections with a direct east-west pedestrian and cycle network in and around Alperton. It will connect the Grand Union development to the towpath on the southwestern side of the canal, the Abbey Estate and the shops beyond and Park Royal employment and commercial hub, while carefully navigating environmental and historical sensitivities.

“We’re proud to be working with the London Borough of Brent on this important infrastructure project that will significantly enhance connectivity for the Alperton community. The new bridge will provide a safe, direct route for pedestrians and cyclists, linking residential areas with green spaces, local amenities and employment hubs.

“Designing within such a constrained and environmentally sensitive site brings unique challenges, but also opportunities to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that respect the area's natural and historical features. Our integrated team is drawing on expertise across engineering, architecture, landscape and ecology to ensure the final design is not only functional and durable, but also enhances the local environment and supports active travel for years to come.”

A public consultation is currently underway with construction expected to start in the winter of 2026.
